Finding A Car
There are a few ways you can go about finding your car. It's true there is an art to sorting out the dream machines from the lemons, so getting some help is a good idea.
Private Sale
Private sale vehicles are ones that you buy direct from the owner. If you pick up the trading post or check the classified ads in the paper (particularly on Saturday) you will find literally hundreds of cars for sale.
It is important to take care when buying a car privately. You will not have any formal protection if you get it home and find something's wrong. But, on the other hand, you'll have more flexibility to haggle and bargain during the negotiations.
Car Yard/Dealer
Car yards make the buying process a little easier because all the cars are in one spot. Cars bought from a dealer will probably be more expensive than private sale because the dealer has to make money out of the sale. One of the benefits is that you get though, is some protection through your mandatory warranty.
Car Broker
These guys are all about service. They talk to you about what kind of car you want, how much you have to spend and then go hunting for you. It makes the process very easy because they handle a lot of the paperwork and running around. Brokers know a lot about spotting value when buying a car, and they'll go to a range of different dealers to find what you want. Sometimes to use a broker will not cost you anything at all. They get their money from the dealer who they make a sale for.
Queensland Teachers' Credit Union has its own department of car brokers – The Motor Vehicle Consultants. Check out the service they offer and don't miss Motor Mouth's car buying tips!
